This presentation reviews basic concepts relating to physician assessment in North America, including:

• A review of high-stakes testing and the need for a multi-modal approach

• How validity and reliability affect assessment design and quality

• Criteria for good testing and good assessments

• Reviewing a sampling of tests commonly used
